Gameweek 0 is a phantom. The live schedule gives us the real picture: Season 4 is active, the major top flights have completed 15 league matches, Gameweek 16 falls on Wednesday, September 23, and Gameweek 17 arrives on Saturday, September 26.

That intervening round matters. Every position and points total below is the current snapshot, not necessarily the table that will greet Saturday’s kick-offs.

Manchester derby: control meets direct force

Manchester Red are fifth and Manchester Blue sixth, level on 24 points. Red have scored 23 league goals to Blue’s 14, yet the tactical contrast is sharper than the table.

Blue used 4-2-3-1 in all 10 analysed matches, selecting Passing six times. Red went Long Ball in nine of 10 and used 4-1-2-2-1 most frequently. That points towards Blue circulating through midfield while Red attack the space behind them.

Neither side has a recovery lane. Both play National Cup ties on Monday, then Blue travel to Leeds and Red host Brighton on Wednesday before Saturday’s derby.

The absences bite, too. Rodrigo Hernández Cascante is injured until October 5 for Blue. Red remain without Bruno Borges Fernandes until October 17 and Jacob Maguire until September 29. In a three-match week, protecting the centre may matter more than producing another tactical surprise.

Napoli’s two-stage title examination

Napoli lead Italy on 33 points, four clear of Roma, after six consecutive league victories. Their weekend assignment is the card’s clearest title-grade contest: third-placed Torino White visit with 25 points.

First, Napoli must negotiate Wednesday’s trip to fourth-placed Lecco. It is a demanding sequence against two members of the current top four.

Napoli’s flexibility has been controlled rather than frantic. They used six formations across the 10-match tactical sample but selected Normal nine times. Recent evidence identified three different Torino White shapes, also all with Normal intent. This should be a contest about occupation of space rather than a wild change of tempo.

Désiré Doué carries a two-match ban in the current squad state, covering precisely this midweek-and-weekend run. Napoli have the depth, but their rotation will be properly tested.

Tottenham and West Ham: a derby under the trapdoor

This London meeting comes with relegation pressure attached. Tottenham are 16th on 16 points; West Ham are 14th on 17. Tottenham sit only one point above 18th-placed Brentford.

The matchup model finds just 0.2 rating points between the clubs’ best available elevens. Its planning heuristic points Tottenham towards 4-2-3-1 Passing against a West Ham side that has rotated shapes and styles. That is not a prediction. It does underline how little separates them.

Derbies punish hesitation. Here, one mistake could also drag the loser directly into the bottom three conversation.

Four more pressure points

• Liverpool v Chelsea — Liverpool are third on 25 points but have drawn four league matches running. Chelsea, 11th with 21 points, arrive after three consecutive wins. One side needs to turn control into victories; the other suddenly has momentum.
• Paris v Lyon — Leaders Paris have 32 points and a 29-6 goals record. Ninth-placed Lyon used Counter in all five matches of the recent tactical sample, rotating their formation around that fixed idea. Paris must avoid feeding the transition.
• Roda v Bilbao — Sixth meets fifth in Spain, with only two points between them. Bilbao have won four straight; Roda have drawn three straight. Monaco against fourth-placed Lorient supplies France’s other upper-table collision.
• Sassuolo v Monza — Sassuolo are 16th on 14 points, only two above bottom club Monza. Four Italian clubs currently sit on 14, making this the weekend’s most combustible survival fixture.

The leaders have apparent gifts with teeth. Barcelona host bottom side Almería, while Bournemouth welcome last-placed Coventry. Yet Coventry beat Manchester Blue 1-0 on September 12; nobody should file that fixture under routine.

Germany offers a different kind of tension. Frankfurt and Bayern are level on 35 points, with Dortmund one behind. All three play at home against bottom-half opposition: Bremen, Köln and Augsburg respectively. Any slip will be punished immediately.

The pick for tactics is Manchester Blue against Manchester Red. The pick for the title race is Napoli against Torino White. The pick for pure jeopardy is Tottenham against West Ham.

And the scheduling correction is definitive: this is not Gameweek 0. It is Season 4, Gameweek 17—and managers must survive Wednesday before they can even reach it.
