The auction never caught fire. It did not need to.

Mosta’s single 99,375 SVC bid has taken James Lyon from Maryhill, with the transfer completed at 18:05 UTC on Sunday. The offer was lodged three days earlier and exactly matched both the auction minimum and Lyon’s current game value.

Maryhill’s ledger recorded 94,406.25 SVC in transfer income — exactly 95% of the gross fee — lifting their balance to 20.35M SVC.

Why Maryhill let him go

This was no sudden sacrifice by manager zoeeyes. Maryhill had already listed Lyon for 50,000 SVC in March, when the auction attracted no recorded bid.

His playing record explains the persistence. After 13 league appearances in Season 1, Lyon made just one in Season 2 and none in Seasons 3 or 4. He had zero minutes through Maryhill’s first 11 league rounds this season.

His rating has also fallen from 64 in the earliest recorded update to 53 now. Maryhill can cover attacking midfield with players rated 64, 66 and 68, while their top-21 squad average is 66.

For an unbeaten side sitting third in Scotland’s Division 2 with 23 points from 11 matches, Lyon was nowhere near the active rotation. Selling removes his 1,325 SVC wage without weakening the team zoeeyes is actually using.

It was part of a broader clear-out, too. Maryhill sent 57-rated right-back Casper Hugo Nilsson to Mosta for 106,875 SVC just one minute before Lyon’s deal completed. Their Season 4 business now shows five completed departures.

What Mosta are buying

Mosta lead Malta’s Division 2 on goal difference, level with Lija on 25 points after 15 matches. Manager krismo is reshaping that promotion push: five players have arrived, while four outgoing transfers remain pending.

Lyon is not an immediate upgrade. Mosta already have four other specialist attacking midfielders rated 58, 59, 59 and 61, making the new arrival the weakest of five at the position.

The case for the deal is cost and control. Lyon is 23, fully fit, contracted for two seasons and carries the lowest wage among Mosta’s attacking midfielders. His fee represented only 3.87% of the club’s cash immediately before the transfer, leaving 2.47M SVC in the bank.

That makes him a low-risk depth bet, not a title-race statement. If krismo can recover some of the 11 rating points Lyon has lost, Mosta have bought cheaply. If not, they have added another fringe player to an already crowded squad.

The checked verdict: one bid, no resistance and no mystery. Maryhill finally found a buyer for a player they had stopped using; Mosta bought inexpensive cover rather than a new first-choice creator.
