The bigger-club call never came. Moreira de Cónegos did something ruder: they climbed without it.

On August 29, desousa’s public Discord voice, desousap, discussed the problem of promising managers earning trust from influential owners.

He bought his own doorway

desousa took charge on March 21, 2025, after five previous Moreira managers had recorded between two and five games apiece. His reign has reached 127 matches and 67 wins, all with one club.

His origin story was not a job application. He bought influence, installed himself and inherited a side he described as 16th in Portugal. They finished that first season eighth, rose to seventh in Season 2, then collected 66 points, fourth place and the Season 3 Portuguese Cup.

The manager still holds 2,982 units of Moreira influence. That small piece of ownership became something larger: permission to prove himself.

The current proof is striking. After 13 Season 4 league matches, Moreira are third with 23 points from six wins, five draws and two defeats, scoring 18 and conceding nine. They sit above Benfica despite the league-table rating snapshot putting Moreira at 76 and Benfica at 85.

This is no giant dressed as an underdog. Moreira have a 13,000-seat stadium, 9,714 supporters and 16.57M SVC in cash. In January, sorareportugal jokingly questioned the club’s ambition. desousap answered that ambition was present; budget was the missing ingredient. Four months later, when he announced his 100th match, the same community rival replied: “Well done, and what a ride!”

His transfer work explains the climb—and the restraint.

Moreira’s fetched Season 4 ledger shows 64.51M SVC received and 51.65M spent, leaving a 12.86M fee surplus. The defining sale was 17-year-old, 79-rated midfielder Wassim Slama for 42.94M SVC.

Rather than chase one replacement, desousa spread 40.63M across four players aged 22 or younger: Valerio Farcomeni, Leny Meyer, Elijah Dijkstra and Benjamin Eichner. A fifth arrival, 29-year-old Josh Knight, cost 11.01M and is now loaned to Setúbal.

It is not blind youth hoarding. It is a small-club hedge: sell one premium teenager, distribute the risk and finish with money left over. That matches his earlier description of building a “younger and more balanced squad,” even if sacrificing Slama must have hurt.

Seven shapes, no autopilot

Moreira’s current tactics are hidden, but the completed-match record reveals the philosophy. Across 13 league starts, desousa used seven different formations. The list includes 4-2-2-2, 4-4-1-1, 5-3-2 Defensive and 4-5-1 Defensive. Every starting plan was submitted by the manager; none was autopicked.

Passing was his most frequent starting style, used six times. Defensive and Normal appeared three times each, with Long Ball used once. This is adaptation, not devotion to a favourite diagram.

Even the defeats complicate the label. Moreira began defensively away to Benfica yet produced 21 shots, 14 on target and 49% possession. They lost 3-1 because Benfica scored three times from six efforts on target—not because desousa refused to attack.

The latest win was more characteristic. Ángel Alarcón Galiot went off injured after 13 minutes against Estoril; Anton Hlushchenko scored after 31. Moreira then protected a 1-0 victory from a near-even contest: 51% possession, 15 shots to 12 and five on target to four.

The formation changes. The principle does not: find the matchup, stay competitive, waste little.

Forever—or until the call?

What makes desousa tick is the tension between belonging and recognition. Ownership gave him his entrance. Moreira gave him longevity. Data, he believes, should earn the next opportunity.

He made clear that he was not demanding a super-club. He wanted the ecosystem to notice a manager who had already done the grinding. Yet his most revealing declaration came months earlier.

Perhaps that is why the bigger call matters. It would prove that Soccerverse rewards the patient builder, not merely the loudest or richest name. Until it comes, desousa has a cup, a top-three team and a compact stadium where the evidence keeps piling up.
