Weekend? The live fixture list says Wednesday. Season 4's second league round is scheduled for 22 July, beginning at 18:00 UTC in several European top flights before South America takes over at 22:00.

One result is a clue, not a trend. One defeat does not create a relegation battle, either. Even so, Gameweek 2 has paired perfect starters, heavyweight rivals and bottom-three sides early enough to expose which managers can adjust.

Main event: Feyenoord vs Ajax

Both arrive with three points. Feyenoord are fifth after winning 2-1 at Eindhoven; Ajax sit seventh following a 1-0 victory over Utrecht. Last season's table adds substance: Feyenoord finished second on 78 points, six ahead of fifth-placed Ajax.

The Dutch competition calls this rivalry De Klassieker. From a tactical perspective, it is also Gameweek 2's best contrast.

Slice has used a normal 4-5-1 in Feyenoord's two recorded matches. Huggo opened with a counter-attacking 4-2-2-2. If those shapes return, Feyenoord gain an extra midfield body but Ajax carry an extra forward for the first transition. Feyenoord must also respond to Monday's 2-0 continental defeat at Glasgow Green. Recovery time is short. The first lost midfield duel could decide the match.

The bottom-three reset: Deventer vs Doetinchem

The same Dutch card provides the opposite pressure. Deventer are 18th after losing 3-0; Doetinchem are 20th following a 5-1 home defeat.

Both opened in attacking 4-2-3-1 systems. Brave, certainly. Repeating that approach without better rest defence would be proper risky. This is not a relegation six-pointer after one match, but it is the first test of whether either manager can balance the double pivot and protect the spaces vacated further forward.

Dortmund vs Bayern: perfect starts, different plans

Bayern are fourth after a 2-0 win, Dortmund sixth after a 2-1 victory. Both have three points and a division-leading average player rating of 87.

Their current sheets point in different directions: Dortmund have submitted a long-ball 3-5-2, while Bayern show an attacking 4-2-3-1. That puts the wide areas under the microscope. Dortmund's wing-backs can pin Bayern deeper, but losing the first duel would release Bayern's three supporting attackers into the space behind them.

Availability tilts towards the visitors. Bayern have all 26 squad members available; Dortmund have 22 of 25. Small margins, elite squads. This is where they matter.

Lisboa vs Porto: the champions seek a league spark

Porto won Season 3 with 93 points and only 13 goals conceded. Lisboa finished third on 77. Neither won this season's opener: Porto drew 0-0 with Benfica, while Lisboa were held 1-1 by Moreira de Cónegos.

Porto then won 6-0 at Maribor on Monday. Their current attacking 3-2-2-2-1 will meet Lisboa's attacking 4-2-3-1 at 19:00 UTC. Porto also have all 30 players available, compared with 23 of Lisboa's 24.

The champions have the deeper bench and an extra build-out line. Lisboa have the clearer player between the lines. Whoever controls that central pocket controls the match.

The late leader test

At 22:00 UTC, Brazil's early leaders Caxias do Sul Green visit fourth-placed Porto Alegre Red. Caxias scored six in their opening win; Porto Alegre Red began with a 2-0 clean sheet. Both carry an average player rating of 71, so the table offers the cleanest description: the division's most productive attack against an opening-day shutout.

• O Pamplona vs Sevilla Green — Spain's 20th and 18th-placed sides both lost without scoring. Pamplona still had 56 per cent possession and 11 shots; Sevilla Green managed 53 per cent, 15 shots and nine on target. Territory was not the problem. Control was.
• Torino White vs Torino Red — an all-Torino derby between two one-point sides. White opened with a 2-2 draw; Red with a 0-0. One city, two very different first impressions.
• Lyon vs Lens — second against fourth in France, with both sides on three points and 2-0 records. Lyon produced 17 shots and 11 on target in Gameweek 1; Lens needed seven and four. Volume meets efficiency.

The numbers are only one match old, so they whisper rather than shout. By Wednesday night, however, at least two perfect starts cannot remain intact, two bottom-three sides will have revealed whether they can adapt, and several bold tactical commitments will have met their first proper examination.
