Manchester Blue 2, Madrid White 2. The crowd of 55,072 had scarcely settled before Kylian Mbappé struck; by full time, Philip Foden had answered twice and Bart Verbruggen had made 11 saves to protect Madrid White’s point in the Continental League fixture recorded under ENG Division 1.

The result was level. The balance of play was anything but. Manchester finished with 68 per cent possession, 22 shots and 13 on target; Madrid managed nine attempts and tested Dominik Greif four times. Madrid’s efficiency—and their goalkeeper—made the difference.

Four goals, several tactical turns

Madrid began in an attacking 3-4-2-1 and scored in the opening minute. Quentin Ndjantou Mbitcha supplied Mbappé, whose first shot put Gevenito’s side ahead. The manager immediately switched Madrid to a counter-attacking approach.

Manchester had started in a long-ball 4-1-3-2, but Phesiola moved to Passing after 10 minutes. The pressure was already building: Verbruggen denied Jérémy Doku after five minutes, then saved from Kevin De Bruyne twice and Luka Stojković before the 21-minute mark.

Foden levelled on 16 minutes, only for Madrid to strike again on the half-hour. Mbitcha was once more the provider and Endrick Moreira supplied the finish. Two assists from two key passes: proper economy from Madrid’s left-sided creator.

De Bruyne was booked two minutes later, while Nico O’Reilly collected Manchester’s other yellow shortly after the interval.

Gevenito moved Madrid to Defensive at half-time. Phesiola introduced Sávio Moreira for Stojković, and the hosts came again: Foden forced saves in the 43rd and 46th minutes, missed another chance on 51, and watched Jahmai Simpson-Pusey test Verbruggen on 54.

The equaliser arrived one minute later. John Stones supplied Foden, who completed his double and made it 2-2.

Madrid responded on the hour with three substitutions, a shift into a 4-1-2-2-1 and a return to Counter. Aurélien Tchouaméni replaced Jude Bellingham as part of that reshuffle. It reduced Madrid’s attacking presence—they did not register another effort on target—but restored enough structure to withstand the final half-hour.

Phesiola then sent Erling Braut Haaland on for Foden at 66 minutes, while Joško Gvardiol replaced the booked O’Reilly. The logic was clear with Manchester’s plan back on Long Ball: add a dominant central target. The effect was limited. Haaland had one attempt, saved by Verbruggen in the 79th minute.

Foden starred, Verbruggen decided it

Foden was the official man of the match: two goals from seven shots and an eight rating before his withdrawal. Verbruggen also earned an eight, and his 11 saves tell the sharper story. Manchester put 13 efforts on target and scored only twice.

Mateo Kovačić quietly drove the home side’s chance production with seven key passes. Rico Lewis delivered four key passes and three key tackles for another eight-rated performance, while Stones added two key passes, two key tackles and the assist for Foden’s second.

Madrid’s attacking numbers were leaner but ruthless. Mbappé and Endrick converted two of their four shots on target, both created by Mbitcha. They also won the corner count 7-3 despite having only 32 per cent of the ball, evidence that their direct attacks still reached dangerous areas.

The scoreline flatters Madrid’s control of the match, but not their execution. They had a clear plan after the early goal, took their openings and defended with an outstanding goalkeeper. Credit where it is due.

One point—and an immediate test

Leverkusen lead the six-club table after their 11-1 opening win over Oswestry. Manchester sit second and Madrid third, both on one point with two goals scored and two conceded.

The next round comes on Monday, 27 July. Manchester travel to early leaders Leverkusen; Madrid host Antwerp. Blue’s chance creation will travel well, but 22 shots must produce more than two goals. Madrid earned this draw. They will not want to require another 11-save performance to earn the next one.
