On 6 July, someone in the Discord transfers channel asked: "who is the current manager of Aston Villa?" No one replied.

The manager is called astonvilla. He has no linked Discord account. He has never bought or sold a share, and he holds no influence at Villa or at any other club. His entire balance sheet is 40 manager-wage payments, which add up to 147.02 SVC. At today's rate that is about 41 US cents.

His Villa side is fifth in ENG Division 1 with 38 points from 23 games. They have conceded 13 goals, and only London Red (12) have let in fewer. Villa also have the third-lowest average player rating in the division (79) and the second-smallest bank balance (19.18M SVC).

The understudy

Villa already had a manager. rezataghyy took the club at launch in January 2025. He was relegated from Division 1 in season one and finished fifth in Division 2 in season two. He was a Villa man long before that: in 2024 he was on Discord asking someone to "send me 5000 aston villa shares".

In March 2026 a manager vote opened at Villa. Theramoe, now Bournemouth's manager and Villa's third-biggest holder, asked why. Villa's biggest influence holder, xayagaming, answered:

Reza is able to come online periodically, its for backup in case he cannot login.

Theramoe called it a "Good strat", because the offer would "give the voted person access to take over anytime". The backup was astonvilla. He won the vote 13,984–0 on 6 March and took the job 20 days later.

Villa had 32 points from 16 games when he arrived. Over his 18 league matches they went won 13, drawn 4, lost 1. They scored 36, conceded 11 and kept ten clean sheets. One of those wins was 6-1 at Blackburn.

Twenty-four seconds

Seven and a half hours after a 3-2 win at Bristol Red, early on 11 June, astonvilla left the job at 02:33 UTC. He was back at 02:35, then left again at 03:22. Twenty-four seconds later rezataghyy was manager once more. A vote between the two men closed that afternoon, 20,905–11 for rezataghyy.

rezataghyy took charge of the last four games, winning two and losing two. Villa finished as Division 2 champions on 81 points, ten clear of Burton-upon-Trent. On 21 June the shareholders voted 24,080–0 to bring astonvilla back. He took over again on 28 June, four days after the last league game.

So the record book gives the title to rezataghyy, and astonvilla's honours list is empty. He won 43 of the 81 points.

None of this looks like a feud. Each handover took seconds, and across every ballot the only votes cast against the winner were those 11. rezataghyy has managed Erzurum since 29 September. He is still Villa's second-biggest holder (6,391) and he is Ross Barkley's agent.

Shut the door, take the point

In the top flight, astonvilla's first job is not to lose. Villa have kept 13 clean sheets in 23 league games. Six of their eight draws were 0-0, and all six came away from home. At Anfield, leaders Liverpool had 24 shots and put 12 on target. Villa managed one shot on target, and Damián Martínez was man of the match in a 0-0 draw. At London Red, Villa allowed three shots and none of them was on target.

The squad is built to defend. Its average tackling rating is 88, against 82 for passing. Martínez is rated 90 and has 12 clean sheets. Oliver Watkins has scored 13 of Villa's 22 league goals. At home Villa are W7 D1 L3, and away they are W3 D7 L2. Crystal Palace beat them 3-0 at home on 23 September. Since then Villa are unbeaten in seven league games, with four wins and two goals conceded.

Sell first

His transfers have been just as careful. Since March he has sold players for 68.48M SVC and spent 13.53M, a net gain of 54.95M:

• Emiliano Buendía went to Reims for 37.85M
• Mehdi Taremi went to Derby for 27.94M. Villa had paid 16.08M for him in January 2025
• Cyril Ngonge came from Everton for 10.07M, his only big signing
• Sil Swinkels left and Peter Itodo arrived on the same morning, each for 2.682M
• A 36-year-old reserve goalkeeper cost 411,782 and a 20-year-old left-back cost 366,001

The finances explain why. Player wages cost Villa 3.31M SVC every match. TV money brings in 1.35M, and away from home there are no gate receipts, so each away game leaves Villa about 1.96M down. The manager is paid 5.41 SVC a match.

Does Villa run itself?

Discord wasn't convinced when the March vote came up. felpa35 wrote "Se maneja solo el villa con esos jugadores", which means Villa runs itself with those players.

With those players, it's harder not to get promoted than to get promoted

That may have been true in Division 2. It is harder to argue now that 17 top-flight clubs have a higher average rating than Villa. When Villa lost to Bournemouth in August, svbase.eu took a different view:

not a broken system. Avoid the panic transfer. Fix the margins and trust the structure.

In 41 league games under astonvilla, Villa have taken 81 points. That is exactly what won them the title.

We can't ask him what drives him, because he isn't on Discord. He uses his club's name as his own but has never owned a share of it. What he has built is one of the hardest teams in England to score against. Next up is Brighton away on Saturday, then Manchester Blue at home.
