Saints Empty The Vault For 34 Million As The Run-In Bites Across The Leagues

Southampton splash on Schjelderup, Chelsea tie down a teenager, Torino lose Schuurs for the season — and the dugouts won't stop spinning with nine days left on the Season 3 clock

Saints Empty The Vault For 34 Million As The Run-In Bites Across The Leagues

Nine days. That's all that's left of Season 3 — it closes on July 4 — and the clubs are behaving like a shop ten minutes before closing: grabbing what they can off the shelves, bolting the doors on what they've got, and limping to the till. Here's what landed on the wires this week, from the top flight to the third tier.

Southampton blow the doors off

The biggest completed move on the board didn't come from a glamour side in Division 1 — it came from the second tier. Southampton (ENG Division 2, 7th and unbeaten in six on WDWDWW) paid 34.35M SVC to prise 22-year-old Norway winger Andreas Rædergård Schjelderup out of Benfica. That fee lands at *exactly* eight times the 4.29M the game itself values him at — the very top of what the auction system allows — and it leaves manager Foxtrot's side with just 3.42M SVC in the bank. Vault: emptied.

It's a top-flight-sized punt to force a promotion that's currently slipping out of reach. Schjelderup's already picked up a minor knock for his troubles, though he's due back inside 24 hours.

Chelsea build for tomorrow while today drifts

Down in Division 1, Chelsea are the curiosity of the week. The squad is worth a round-up-topping 295.8M SVC — comfortably the most valuable here — and yet Tyrese's men sit 12th, slipping a place, on a stuttering WWWDLL. Their answer to a season going nowhere? Sign for the next one. In came 18-year-old England striker Harry Howell from Bournemouth for 13.81M SVC — again, bang on eight times his 1.73M valuation — and he was handed a four-year deal before his boots were unpacked. One for the future, not the final nine days.

Torino's season ends a month early

Torino Red (ITA Division 1, 11th, wretched on LLLDWD) take the injury blow of the week. Dutch defender Perr Schuurs, 26, is ruled out for another 40 days — he's not back until August 4, a full month after the season ends. He's done for Season 3, and boss Sotera loses a starter at the worst possible moment.

He's not alone on the treatment table. Promotion-chasing Castellammare di Stabia — 2nd in ITA Division 3, flying on WWWWWD with a 34.3M war chest — lose veteran keeper Lovre Kalinić for 78 days, wiping out the rest of their run-in. And the grimmest entry anywhere this week belongs to York's Romano Floriani Mussolini, handed a 129-day serious injury — the longest layoff on the entire board.

The dugout merry-go-round

If you blinked, you missed a manager. Fresh appointments arrived at Charlton (lilbotto), Cambridge (efri98) and Woking in England; Mantova (Dhen77), Crema (McflyChill) and Perugia in Italy; Le Mans (Matador2) and Guingamp in France. Resignations rolled in at Monopoli, Saint-Brieuc and Guingamp.

The busiest man on the carousel, though, was FarhanSantos, who took charge of Reggio nell'Emilia in Italy *and* Würzburg in Germany inside the same week — two clubs, two countries, one diary.

The money picture

The cash extremes remain stark: Dortmund (257.2M SVC) and Wolverhampton (252.3M) are sitting on fortunes, while Milano Blue are 12.55M in the hole. But the most telling number this week is Chelsea's — a 295.8M squad delivering 12th place. Even in Soccerverse, money doesn't buy you a league position. It just buys you an 18-year-old and a long wait.
